Nikita: Dropped. It's a good little show, but would I buy it? no. if I'm not buying it, then I'm not wasting time acquiring it.

Here we go! )

Apparently some kid who was just back off suspension decided to keep pissing off Stewart till he snapped and there was nearly a fight in class. It was stopped before it got to a fight, so no action can be taken against Stewart(and even if the fight had gone further, the school would have heard me) Apparently the kid wanted to go back on suspension. It didn't work, he's got an after school detention instead.

I will be so glad when he leaves there. I'm tired of wondering if the phone will ring, or what's happened this time. I'm sick of hearing how so-and-so screwed up the classes so badly that the teachers have to send work home so the pupils keep up, because the council's lily-livered to weed out the offenders, the staff's either too old to care or too young to cope.

I get that the area is deprived and the parents don't care and so the kids are growing up with a shitload of problems that mean most of them will perpetuate the cycle in a few years time.

But I'm sick of suffering because of the lowest common denominator. I'm sick of poverty being an excuse for people being shits and having shitty lives and making the rest of us have shitty lives. I used to be proud of being working class.

Now? It's synonymous with sloth, addiction and excuses.

I'm Aspirational Working Class. I may be poor, but I'm proud of who I am and what I can be.

I'm beginning to see the point of Hardcore CF. The amount of tantrumming kids and running about in the cafe - where there's hot drinks that will burn and maybe kill a kid - and parents just letting them do it or not really telling them off. Doing that constant "do as you're told" in a wishy washy voice until it's just a string of meaningless sounds. Yesterday it was a 5 and 3 yo running round the cafe, barrelling into the waitress, who was carying a tray with soup on it. Manager tells them off and as she's talking to the mum, the kids bolt out into the car park.

Then some three year old was refusing to put her jacket on. Her mother's friend bribed her to put her jacket on with a toy car. Wow, that's responsible parenting. Teaching her to put up a fuss and she gets rewarded for it. I can't wait to see her when she's a teenager and she's out all night and she's 14 and they can't handle her. The first kids won't make it to adulthood.

And no, my son never behaved like that. because he wasn't allowed. First sign of arsing about was jumped on. What do I have now? Mannered, responsible teen. Fair enough, I can't get him to school, but that's because he doesn't like school. Never has any parents night or school report been about him being rude or ill mannered or disruptive. "He's a lovely guy, I just wish he'd focus!" sums up his school career.

Damn, I feel better now.*deep breath*
Maggie Q? Asian? Fuck, that's funny.

She looks about as Asian as I do. (Wedding Pics tag shows you me)

I want more diverse ethnic casting in leading roles on US TV, but I want people who actually look Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, whatever.

Because Hollywood only cares about what your heritage is insomuch as it looks good on a publicity sheet. It's your face that's the most important thing. If you don't actually look like whatever race you're supposed to - and Q doesn't - what good does that do "diverse casting"?

I'm sick of seeing Latino actors playing "Second Drug Dealer on the Left." look at Benito Martinez. Before playing David Aceveda on The Shield, that was all he played. Not Lawyers on one of the L&Os or a Doctor on a long running TV series. The only non-white or black actors I can think of in such roles are Archie Kao (CSI) or Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy)or Ming-na Wen (ER). Are we about to see Diechan Lachman leading her own series anytime soon? I doubt it, even though Dollhouse showcased her and Enver Thingy as much as it showcased that Eliza Dushku can't act outside a very narrow range. (Give Nikita to Diechan! She would rock that shit and she actually looks Tibetan!)

That's Asian actors and the only few I can think of. Apart from Dexter or Oz, I can't think of any Latino mainstream actors who aren't playing drug dealers. maybe the Mexican in The Closer, but that's not a main role.

I want to see more people from different races heading up my TV, not ones who pass for it when it suits them.
1. The changing rooms are apparently a nudist colony. Someone was applying fake tan today. All over. She wasn't a natural blonde.

2. SInce I started taking O3 fish oils, my cellulite has improved. It's much less orange-peel looking when squeezed.

3. I have no idea how I'll work out when Stewart is on holiday. HE'S TAKING OVER MY WORKOUT

*Sings lumberjack song*

4. PSNHome is full of morons

5. Why do my weights feel heavier than theirs?

6. Cute trainers. It all helps.

7. It's so hard to avoid Dexter spoilers. AT this rate I'll be seeing the series next Christmas.

8. What shall I get myself in January if I manage to workout daily over Xmas?

9. I need more sleep.

10. Wonder when I'll hear if my Disclosure check for the new voluntary thing I'm meant to be starting in Jan? I wonder if I'll pass it. I was going through one earlier this year, put the paperwork in and never heard back, despite me and the careers lassie trying.

If I fail, I bet it's the gun-in-the-chippie thing that kills it. Some blind cunt overreacts and now I can't get a job in my chosen field.

11. Finish local xmas cards while waiting on window fixing man. Due to being skint, international cards will become New Year Cards. Money's short and times are hard. Here's your fucking Christmas New Year card.

Hopefully he won't take long and I'll get out on my bike.

12. went gym today, 8 mile cycle and 25 min yoga. Found it really easy today. Need to step up on non-gym days.

14. Don't feel very fannish lately. Miss it. Miss the squee.

15. I have fruit flies in my bin. I have no fruit in the bin. This puzzles me.

16. Dammit, I used to be funny. Spark must have gone with my squee.

17. Everything is better than it was this time last year. I have to remember that.

18. Cheer me up. tell me something happy for you today.
I must be getting better. I cleaned out part of my floor. I seem to have a carpet.

Bike saga continues. Still don't have a handlebar stem, so off to recyke-a-bike to see if they can order one. I found the receipt for the seat and it was dated in July. I can't see this damn bike far enough.

And that was just the pilot.

I hear a redo is in the offing and if it went the way of BSG, I think it could work. As long as everyone isn't dumb as a bag of spanners.

Now, X-Bomber held up very well -it was more noticing things I didn't when I was 8 - Lamia and Shiro's creepy relationship, Shiro talking about the rationship he had with his (missins for years) father. Something he couldn't have had, because Professor Hagen was missing for years, and certainly through almost all of Shiro's life. It's shown that lamia and Shiro are ageing with each other, maybe her slightly younger, so he couldn't have raised him passed being a toddler.

And lamia is supposed to be a hotshot computer and comms person. Would have been nice if we'd seen it, rather than being told about it.

It's hard with Japanese stuff from my childhood, because I don't know what the hell version I saw. English dubs were Massakred, but is the version wandering round on DVD the Jap original dubbed and subbed? I wouldn't mind seeing both versions. I know Battle of the Planets was slaughtered. Even as late as Card Captor Sakura, they were messing round with things.

I wonder how much of X-Bomber is the same as the original, because in the doc on the DVDs, they said they had to write and English original script to fit the visuals because the japanese translation provided by the Jap producers was total Engrish.

I guess for the 70s, things like Buck Rodgers and Knight Rider other stuff I saw, the time was simpler, tastes were simpler. Maybe it was because the series were aimed at kids, rather than adults (Were they? or were they aimed at a mixed audience? Or were they meant for adults?). They were black and white, rather than the shades of grey we see even in kids programmes now. Obviously, I'm 34 now and my tastes have become more shaped and particular since then.

On the other hand many other programmes made in the same era have held up well for me, The Sweeney, The Professionals, The Fall Guy, Man with a Suitcase (which I think was sixties, but that wasn't when I saw it) Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) Six-Million Dollar Man, Charlie's Angels, Quincey, MD. Cagney and Lacy (80s) That's not aged at all.

I didn't like Dempsey and Makepeace (mid-80s) as an adult (SO POSEY!), but I'd love to see Saracen and Tecs again. And watch Day of the Triffids without shitting myself (I was 6!) Juliet Bravo.

I suppose it's a case of the past is another country and they do things differently there.

What are the dos and don'ts that will guarantee you'll watch something or not watch something?

It was harder than I thought to come up with stuff.

1. Groups of people who protect larger society from something or who are stuck together by fate or on the margins of society, like subcultures. Hijinks ensue.

bonus points if they end up on a quest and didn't mean to.

2. the more disparate the characters, the better. I like friction between them, even to the point of downright hatred. But they've still got each others' back.

3. Characters who present a front to the world, but are much deeper under the surface. Especially if they're doing it for the lulz, but secretly believe in what they're doing.

4. Hot guys that can act.

5. Well, just act. beauty is relative.

6. Strong characters, both male and female. They don't have to be fighters, just strong. But I do love a woman who can hold her own and doesn't need to rescued by the menfolks.

7. Guys who would walk through fire for their lover, especially if she's a bad girl. Antagonistic lovers work too. Who doesn't love hatesex?

8. Characters who juggle family life and fighting the good fight without any fuss.

9. Urban fantasy/horror. Keepin' it real!

10. Badass normals.

11. Betrayal - someone sent to betray the group finds he can't do it or a member of the group or society realises that the group/society is evil and they want to do something about it. How the group copes when they find they've been played.

12. the effect the life has on them. Black humour a must.

13. Characters coping or not with their powers.

14. Agency - freedom to or freedom from? For both individuals and the group. Free will v destiny.

15 Action! lots of it.

16. No gratuitous sex or violence. It should enhance the story, not overpower it.

17. A well written, twisty plot.

18. Love and friendship across divides, be they cultural or emotional or species, because characters don't have to be human, especially in horror and SF.

19. the past affecting the present, especially if it's some guy's lovechild. I find the concept of fatherhood within modern parenting and the modern world fascinating.

20. OTPs rule! No triangles, please. Unless they involve threesomes and kinky sex.

21. Danielle Steele films. I can't help myself. It's a sickness.

1. Anything with an actor I hate, even if it's filled with actors I love as well.

2. I don't care about your mid-life crisis. Nor your any-age crisis.

3. I don't care about sex and shopping and your Manolo Blahniks that cost the GDP of Samoa.

4. Doormats, male or female. Unless part of the story is the worm turning, but it's not the focus of the tale

5. Disease of the week films.

6. Ugly, boorish men with hot, sweet wives.

7. Romcoms.

8. Anything with doctors.

9. Inspirational tales of teachers turning the ghetto kidz into geniuses or stopping da kidz poppin' a cap in yo ass.

10. Soaps. Unless it's H&A, which can get as stupid as it likes because it's my crack.

11. People whining about their feelings and wanting to discuss things every five minutes.

12. Single/highflying parents struggling with kids and careers. Real life doesn't work like that!

Now the funny thing about this is that it's not really a cast iron guarantee I'll watch something. I think of several series where they've had all my dos and I still haven't liked them, they just haven't had that little bit extra that's made me sit up and ask them where they've been all my life.

Like Firefly should hit all my buttons, but it just leaves me cold.

I'm finding the voice recorder a wee godsend. I'm recording all the wee bits of plot and character while I'm doing the dishes or whatever.

However, it's made something glaringly obvious. I have a great setting and compelling characters. The one thing I don't have is plot.

So, you can see why that might be a problem.

I also found out why I haven't been able to write any more in Imitating Angels. The backstory/arc that I had planned was taking the same path as Silver Bullet. Now that's not unsalvagable, IA's arc has only ever been hinted at and can be changed. There's casefics and porn I can write (for the three of you that are interested) that have nothing to do with any arc.

On the other hand, I'm not as fannish about SPN as I used to be. I'm not reading much fic and I certainly don't feel like writing it. Even though I'd love to get my WIPs done and dusted, just because. I still adore it, but I just don't feel like any further involvement. My flist is a group of friends now, rather than a friendly group, so we don't need a common fandom to bind us anymore.

My fannish needs are being met by Flashpoint and Primeval (Though much of the Primeval fic is dire)

I'm not going to put Silver Bullet to a publisher or anything, say I ever did get it done. I just want to get something done and out there that's mine I've had these characters and this setting in my head for well over 20 years. They need to get out!

I just need this to be complete, for me. At least with all the other stories I've had, I didn't write them as full stories, but sketches, but they are complete skeletons, ready to be fleshed out and I can live with them like that.

Today can fuck off.

I'm still putting up the flatpack from hell - my hand looks like a bastarding hamburger. All the screws appear to be squint, which does explain why they aren't going in or are going in squint and catching on everything.

Wasted fucking day. To cap it off I have demolished a packet of Pringles, a bag of toffees and half a packet of Ritz crackers. I feel sick.
